At Ballpoint, we’re a growth agency. Our founder Josh used to run his own startup (Wine List) and before that was first employee and head of growth at Thriva.
We’re an agency that aims to be a perfect balance of left brain and right brain. Our teams are evenly split between creative and technical.
We currently work with 15 clients predominantly helping them grow through creative-first paid social, paid search, retention marketing, and conversion rate optimisation.
We build growth models, and measurement frameworks, which often report directly into to CFOs.
Our clients are a mix of the founders, as well as growth, marketing and ecommerce leads.
For the clients we’ve been working with for over a year, we’ve managed to 3x their monthly marketing spend on average – in every case while improving profitability. We look forward to doing the same again next year.
We’re a young agency. We launched in January 2023 at a time when it was clear the role of creativity in modern paid social. The best agencies of the 2010s were still heavily ‘performance’ agencies or ‘creative’ agencies, we launched being both.
We’re also highly ambitious. We will have grown 2.5x year one into year two, and we plan to continue that trajectory for the next 5 years.
Many businesses treat fractional or PT as transactional relationships, but we’d rather you become as integral as our full time team.
About the Job
We’re looking for a client-leading Growth Strategist. This person will likely be looking for a head of growth level role. This job is to join our team at Ballpoint to support on client strategy, analysis, and management, as we enter a new growth phase of our business.
About this Role
We are looking to hire someone who has been directly responsible for growing at least one startup or challenger brand. Our preference is for that experience to be in-house.
Growth is hard. Despite what many gurus might sell you, there are no playbooks. It is a continual job of problem-solving, then finding winning ideas. Pushing on those ideas, only to then hit up against another ceiling.
We are looking for people who have broken through those ceilings in the past. This suits people who are dogged in their determination to win and overcome challenges.
We’re looking for someone with a broad skillset, but importantly with a specialism in paid social. You will have significant experience in growing paid social accounts from small spend to big spend.
Equally important, you will be a fantastic communicator. You will likely have presented to your founders or senior management team, as well as a broader company. You will be humble, empathetic, and highly curious.
Responsibilities
- Growth of the client’s business: predominantly through the scaling of paid acquisition while maintaining or improving profitability.
- Strategy, analysis, and responsibility for the day-to-day management of our client accounts (paid social).
- Working closely with our internal client team of creative strategists, media buyers, creative production, and data engineering.
- The owner of the clients’ growth process. Its on you to come up with the ideas, turn those into experiments, sell those ideas to the client, then run those experiments methodically and scientifically.
Requirement
- Deep experience growing consumer paid social accounts profitably: ideally from ~£15-25k/month up to £100-200k/month.
- Technical understanding of attribution windows, the breakdown effect
- Broad marketing experience that shows you understand how all channels play together
- Analytical skills where you’re deeply comfortable pulling data and analysing it
- Practical experience of the marketing funnel: how to speak to and convert clients throughout the funnel
- Understanding of different measurement frameworks (attribution, incrementality, MMM) and how to apply them
- Excellent communication where you can both (a) explain highly complex subjects to smart generalists, and (b) talk in full detail alongside highly experienced individual contributors.
Optional skills: We would expect you to show significant strength in at least 4 of the following areas
- One other channel with working experience: paid search, CRO, affiliates, SEO, etc
- Growth modelling and forecasting (we often build the growth models mapping retention, payback, lifetime value etc, for our clients)
- Data analysis using SQL or python
- Growth frameworks, mindset, and process
- Direct response copywriting
- Meta API coding
- Experience running lift or incrementality tests, or MMMs
- Experience building growth loops across customer lifecycle
- Establishing a brand within new markets
- Brand marketing experience, with bonus points for effective measurement using an MMM
- Process-driven and operational.
- Creative strategy: if you’ve built our ads yourself that have converted
Detailed requirement
- This role is for 2-3 days per week. We have a minimum requirement of 1 day per week spent in our office in Southwark (we’re 8 mins from both Blackfriars and London Bridge). The other 1-2 days is to be spread across the rest of your week, with a minimum of 45 minutes committed every working day to ensure consistent client communication.
- This is a six month contract, and for the ideal candidate we’d roll this over indefinitely.
- While this fractional or PT role can start soon, we are also hiring for a full time role at the same level alongside this, with an expected start date of mid Q1 next year.
- We have a salary and day rate band for our heads of growth, with the scale within that based on how many of the optional skills you have.
- I’ll fully support you in your growth in a leadership role: both client facing and internally within a team.

- Initial 30 minute phone screen to judge motivation, communication, and high-level apptitude for the role
- In-person technical interview covering off depth of experience across skills
- 0.5-1 days paid work with a specific client challenge
- Final decision and offer
While we’re looking for someone to join this role soon, we will also keep this process open on a rolling basis.
