About Us
Story LLP helps humans collaborate to get what they deserve, starting with lawyers and clients—especially those from historically underrepresented backgrounds.
We're building an AI tool for legal business development and operations management that helps clients from all walks of life get clear, critical information to position themselves and their businesses for legal success and manage their legal services. We're also building an Alliance of talented, independent female and minority attorney specialists to serve those clients - basically, an anti-law firm. We're out to make inefficient BigLaw obsolete by demonstrating how successful attorneys who don't "fit into" the Biglaw model can be when given a fair shot to run an independent practice within a community of real support. We're out to see businesses from the founders who do more with less to get the same thing get the treatment and respect they deserve. We're building elegant, novel technology and genuine human connections to achieve this.
We operate a California law firm and a Delaware software company under the Story LLP brand.
Role Overview
We seek a highly skilled Senior to Staff Level Frontend Contractor to join our dynamic team on a contract basis. In this role, you will design, develop, and optimize user-facing features that provide seamless, engaging, and visually appealing experiences for our clients and team. You will collaborate closely with the CTO and other team members to build intuitive, responsive, and performant web applications that align with Story LLP's innovative approach to legal services.
Responsibilities
- Implement frontend features in our client app (React/Typescript/Next) with components built by a designer.
- Ensure security, cross-browser compatibility, and mobile-friendly design principles.
- Advise the designer and the CTO on maintainability, optimizing the order of projects, and reducing tech debt.
- Collaborate with backend developers, participate in front-end code reviews, and "daily" (on days you log hours) Slack standups.
Qualifications
- Proven 5+ years of experience in frontend development above a junior or intern level. Strong preference for experience working on at-scale apps and not just MVPs.
- Proficiency in React, TypeScript, Next.js, API integration, and RESTful services, including authentication.
- Experience in building applications at scale and delivering high-quality, production-ready code. Code organization and extensibility matter.
- Excellent sync & async communication and teamwork skills.
- Ability to work independently and manage time effectively in a remote environment.
Contract Details
We are looking for someone to embed-ish on the team for up to 20 hours a week. We are 100% remote and do not expect contractors to be generally available during our core office hours (8 am-2 pm PT). However, some availability for meetings and collaboration during those hours is expected. Async standup-style updates are required every day that hours are logged and availability updates for meetings and collaboration are required on a weekly basis.
Our Values
Open-minded learning, humane capitalism, trust, and integrity are key to our brand and team.
We strive to protect the privacy and security of our users and clients, even beyond the requirements of law, and to maintain the protections of attorney-client privilege across our interactions with attorneys and clients.
We seek to work with people who share our values:
- Support and elevate each teammate to thrive as an independent human and a member of our tribe at once
- To give and take from yourself and our tribe in roughly equal measure
- Design by and for the marginalized
- Practice radical transparency
- Embrace lifelong learning
Application Process
A good application includes the following:
- A resume with 5+ years of experience beyond a junior or intern level=
- A portfolio of work that we can review
- At least one frontend codebase that we can review (code organization is a big part of our evaluation criteria)
You must include all of the items above in your application.
The interview process is as follows:
- A 30-minute call with the hiring manager to discuss the role and company.
- Paid flat-fee project for you to build something valuable and interact with the team.
- Upon satisfactory completion of the flat-fee project, we'll sign an hourly contract.
