Role Overview
MaRS is seeking an experienced Advisor to work hands-on with our high-potential Capital Program portfolio (primarily seed and Series A) in the areas of strategic financial planning and modelling. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record as a CFO (fractional or full-time) or investor in scaling startups with expertise in financial operations, fundraising, cash flow management, and strategic planning. This role requires a tactical individual who can provide actionable insights to help CEOs and CFOs navigate the financial complexities of scaling their businesses in sectors such as cleantech, biotech, medtech, digital health, or other transformative technologies. This is a fractional opportunity.
Responsibilities
- Through individual advisory and community events provide guidance on topics relating to scaling hardtech or software ventures like:
- Strategic Financial Guidance: Act as a trusted advisor to CEOs and CFOs, helping to craft and implement financial strategies and capital structures aligned with business goals.
- Fundraising Support: Assist with financial modeling and data room audits to ensure successful fundraising rounds.
- Cash Flow & Budget Management: Guide companies in managing cash flow and forecasting to optimize resource allocation and runway.
- Scenario Planning: Develop and analyze financial scenarios to support decision-making for growth, market expansion, and risk mitigation.Document your work in the MaRS CRM, and follow MaRS policies and processes to enable effective program management.
- Work with the MaRS team to support the delivery of best-in-class programs:
- Assess client needs and plan service delivery in collaboration with the MaRS team
- Provide input into company assessments and program strategy
- Make connections to your network — to talent, customers, experts, and funding
Qualifications
- You are/were a CFO (fractional or full-time) who scaled a high-growth startup and have participated in a strategic finance capacity across multiple financing rounds at the seed and Series A stages. We will give priority to executives who:
- have recent (within the past 2-5 years) experience
- have raised amounts substantially in excess of $20M
- We welcome applications from VCs who have done financial due diligence at multiple Seed and Series A deals.
- We are seeking experts with experience across key sectors like cleantech, biotech, medtech, digital health, and transformative technologies in the software space.
- Proven experience as a CFO, VP of Finance, or similar role, preferably in startups or early-stage science/engineering companies. Relevant experience as an advisor, mentor, or coach for science or engineering based companies at Seed to Series A stages is ideal.
- Hands-on experience with financial modeling, forecasting, and preparing companies for due diligence processes.
- Highly developed analytical and interpretive skills with the ability to translate complex financial data into actionable insights.
- Demonstrated passion for building and scaling startups.
- Personal accountability and commitment to achieving and exceeding goals and objectives
- Familiar with the “language” and terminology of industry, finance, government, and the academic community.
